This is a State forest, not the national park

Watagan State Forest is a Forestry Corporation of NSW working forest in the hills west of Lake Macquarie. You come in from Cooranbong, Cessnock, Morisset or Wyong. People say “the Watagans” for six State Forests together: Watagan, Olney, Heaton, Awaba, Ourimbah and Wyong. Watagans National Park is NPWS, on the same hills, with different rules. The named picnic grounds and camps Forestry Corporation lists for this range are on the Olney page (The Pines) and the Heaton page (lookouts and Watagan Headquarters). They are not in this forest. Camping in NSW State forests is free and first-come where it is allowed. Dogs are welcome under effective control in State Forest, not in the national park. Roads have closed after landslip and wet weather. Check Forestry Corporation before you drive. This site is an unofficial operator’s manual in the State Forest Guide Australia network.

What kind of forest day?

Best for

A self-drive day on forest roads west of Lake Macquarie, with a dog, when you already know the picnic ground is a different forest.

Skip if

You need The Pines, a lookout with a name, a booked camp, or a national-park walk. Those sit on other pages. A town bed is the guaranteed night.

Forest roads

Most people in this forest are on a road, not at a signed picnic ground. The signed picnic ground in the range is The Pines, and that is Olney.

Forest roadsThe Pines is on Olney

Times below are ours. Forestry Corp doesn’t publish walk hours.

  • Half day

One way in on the forest roads, then turn around while you still have daylight.

  • Full day

If you want tables and a named walk, that day is The Pines in Olney. Don’t try both forests if the road report is already poor.

  • Overnight

First-come, and no named camp in this forest. A sure bed is a town. Friday Plan B if you were aiming at The Pines.

“The Watagans” is the NSW Government name for six State Forests. The named picnic grounds and camps in this range are on Forestry Corporation’s Olney and Heaton pages. Camping, dogs and fire rules are the statewide Forestry Corporation pages. Olney and Heaton places are not in Watagan State Forest.

Not independently walked. Roads and fire rules change. Check Forestry Corporation of NSW before you drive. An old reopening notice is not open today.
